I've spent the past couple days here reviewing reels and I just thought I would post my top 5 pointers for people thinking of sending a reel into a company.
1. Put your best foot forward
-Generally you have about 30 second to get my attention. You should put your best work first it will make the person reviewing your reel want to watch more. Sometimes the person reviewing is looking at hundreds of reels. We don't have time to wait 2.5 mins into your reel to get to the good stuff.
2. Send in a DVD
-A CD will just make me angry. Lucky for the fools in this batch I was using my laptop... and graciously copied the file from their CD. Usually reels are looked at on a DVD player and a CD is of no use there. Also... I don't want to have to go to your website, DVDs are cheap go get some.
2 1/2. Make sure your DVD works
-Crashing my computer is not a good foot to start out on.
3. F*%@
-If you are applying to a studio that makes children's movies, using the F word 473998763 times on your reel, lip sync or not, its a bad choice.
4. Leave your ball bounce at home
-I don't need to see all the work you've ever done, show the best of the best. Sometimes I'll be watching a great reel and then all of a sudden its like "What is this doing on here?". It can hurt your chances of getting hired.
5. If you're applying for more than one position... send in more than one reel.
-Generally you won't get passed around from department to department. Whoever gets your first will say 'yay' or 'nay'. If you want to be an animator and maybe a modeler too, send in an animation reel and a modeling reel tailored to those professions.
The End.
